For a better understanding on the topic, today we would like to compare and contrast drip and sprinkler irrigation.

Irrigation systems are used in commercial agriculture in order to provide sufficient moisture content to the crop. It also can be defined as an artificial application of water to a land or a soil. In order to fully comprehend the similarities and differences between drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation, a definition of each should be reviewed.

Drip irrigation, also known as trickle irrigation, micro irrigation or localized irrigation, is an irrigation method that saves water and fertilizer by allowing water to drip slowly to the roots of plants, either onto the soil surface or directly onto the root zone, through a network of valves, pipes, tubing, and emitters. It is done through narrow tubes that deliver water directly to the base of the plant.

Sprinkler irrigation is a method of applying irrigation water which is similar to natural rainfall. Water is distributed through a system of pipes usually by pumping. It is then sprayed into the air through sprinklers so that it breaks up into small water drops which fall to the ground.

So now that we defined both drip and sprinkler irrigation, we can look more at the similarities and differences between the two.

Drip irrigation is widely used in areas where water scarcity is a huge problem and very useful in commercial agricultural systems such as green houses, containerized plants, coconut cultivation, and landscape purposes. One advantage to drip irrigation is the ability to control the application of a small amount of water to the lawn and landscape over a long period of time.

Sprinkler irrigation has some advantages over drip irrigation and vice versa. Drip irrigation allows water to be slowly fed to the landscape, and the process cannot be seen from above ground. Sprinkler irrigation is sometimes preferred because the homeowner can actually see the amount of water being fed to the lawn and plants, making it much easier to visualize and control water management.

More water is commonly used with sprinkler irrigation although one advantage is the watering process can be completed more quickly and efficiently. With sprinkler irrigation, spraying water actually cools the lawn and foliage which is heated by direct sunlight. The perfect balance of sunlight and water can be the formula for a healthy green landscape.

Another advantage of sprinkler irrigation is the cleansing of airborne dust and bugs. Spraying water from above the greenery will keep the essential parts of the lawn and plants clean of debris and garden pests.

Many people do not realize that it is possible to convert from a sprinkler irrigation system to a drip irrigation style, and vice versa. We can help with sprinkler and irrigation projects here in the Orlando and Central Florida area.
